A recent discussion in Twitter on beauty tips and products prompted me to write this post. I have quite a few favorites from the world of beauty products but I greatly believe in sticking to some tried and tested natural ingredients for skin and hair care, and trust me they are absolutely wonderful! Not only are they chemical and side effect free, they are most often as effective as over the counter and high end beauty products found in the market!
Let me share some of the natural ingredients I absolutely swear by to have tremendous beneficial effects on your skin and hair!
1. Aloe Vera :

Aloe Vera has amazing healing properties and the best part is that you can easily grow it in your kitchen garden. It works wonders on my acne prone and sensitive skin and any pigmentation and blemishes just fade away with time. Aloe Vera is soothing and works well on sun burns and minor skin abrasions too!
I just slice open an Aloe Vera leaf length-wise and religiously apply the gel onto my face, neck or any parts of the body I please. I leave it on for about 20 minutes and wash it off.
Aloe Vera juice, taken orally, has amazing health benefits as well. It is a great way to detox your system and it also aids in digestion. However, I haven’t yet started drinking Aloe Vera juice yet, but plan to do so pretty soon! 🙂
2. Sandalwood Powder :

Sandalwood is my life saver! Not only am I addicted to the relaxing and soothing fragrance of sandalwood (my room freshener, hand wash, body oil and pretty much everything is in sandal wood fragrance!), its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and astringent properties works wonders on my skin. Sandalwood suits all skin types and it is known to reduce pimples, soothes dry areas of the skin and its refreshing scent makes it an essential aromatic oil.
I use a sandal wood face pack once a week that nourishes my skin and keep it healthy and acne free. I mix sandal wood powder with rose water to make a thick paste, apply it on my face and neck for about 20 minutes and wash it off with cold water. I also take a body massage with sandalwood oil once in a while and its aromatic oil is extremely relaxing and gives almost a spa like experience at home!
3. Honey :

I am sure all of you are quite aware of the goodness of honey for health and beauty. Honey has anti-aging and anti-microbial properties and is also an excellent moisturizer. Needless to say, honey is one of the essential ingredients in my kitchen. It is healthy, tasty and if used regularly, can give extra ordinary results to maintain a healthy skin.
I start my day with a table spoon of honey mixed in green tea to detoxify. I often substitute sugar with honey on many hot and cold beverages and it really boosts energy into the system! I also create home made face packs by mixing honey with lemon and gram flour and apply the pack on my face for about 20 minutes or till it dries. This pack works as a scrub, hydrates the skin and keeps it blemish free.
4. Neem (Indian Lilac) :

For any kind of skin inflammation, black heads and sensitivity, neem leaves are a natural substitute to all over-the-counter anti- bacterial; anti- parasitic, anti- fungal, anti-inflammatory and analgesic products! ‘Neem’ is the Indian name for ‘Azadirachta Indica’, commonly known as ‘Indian Lilac’ with tremendous skin care benefits.
A face pack of neem paste mixed with rose water and/or sandalwood powder is excellent for any kind of skin eruptions. Instead of using a pimple cream I just rub a few neem leaves and use the juice on the area. it takes the same amount of time to clear an acne as a cream but minus all the harsh chemicals. It also controls excess oil on the skin and acts as a great astringent specially during the hot and humid summer months.
5. Multani Mitti or Fuller’s Earth :

Multani Mitti, an Indian name for ‘Fuller’s Earth’ is one of the key ingredients in lots of face packs found in the market. Multani Mitti has oil absorbing properties and works wonders on my combination skin type. It acts as a wonderful scrub, unclog pores and gives visibly soft and supple skin right after a single use.
I mix a bit of powdered multani mitti with just enough rose water to make a thick paste and apply on my face. I do not keep it for too long as it dries my skin out way too much. 10-15 minutes is more than enough to show results. It improves complexion and gives a radiant skin in minutes.
I consider myself really lucky to have access to these natural ingredients and they are definitely good for my skin! The biggest plus point is that they are 100% natural and costs little to no money! They have absolutely no side effects and have never disappointed me in all these years! 🙂
