Blogging Tip : What I learnt from 3 years of Blogging

Fashion, Fashion Blogs, Style, Indian Fashion Blog, Street Style, Fashion Photography, Fashion Blog Anniversary, Blogging tips

First of all, have you taken part in my blog anniversary giveaway yet? If not, you must do it right away because you sure want to win this cute and colourful gift hamper that I have in store for you! Secondly, I am repeating myself once again in this post, this is the blog anniversary month of Style Over Coffee.

I started this blog three years back with the name ‘Little Book of Fashion’ because after reading a lot of fashion blogs I realised I could start one too! I had no idea what to expect or if it had any future. I took help of my husband’s photography skills and started posting, learning and growing with each post we published. We both learnt a lot about photography, editing, about SEO etc. and slowly picked up the nitty gritties of the blogging world and kept evolving with it. Last year we changed the name of our blog to Style Over Coffee and after a while Pankaj extended his support from just helping me with photography to becoming a co-founder and a guest blogger. There has been a lot of changes in our personal life like changing cities, travel and full time jobs but nothing could deter us from keeping Style Over Coffee alive and running. Today when I look back it seems like a long journey and I do know we still have a long way to go. But whatever we learnt, we achieved in these 3 years is priceless and worth sharing!

I take this post as an opportunity to share a few thoughts and experiences that I gathered in these 3 years and I hope all the newbie bloggers out there who keep sending me messages and mails for tips will be able to get some help from this post. The more experienced bloggers can sure relate to this post as the thoughts will probably be pretty similar. And the rest of the non-blogging world, just enjoy the post and give us bloggers some credit for working so hard on our passions! 🙂

So, what did I learn in these 3 years of blogging?

I learnt that blogging is no easy job! Unless you are blogging just as a hobby, it’s quite difficult. It’s time consuming, at times frustrating and definitely requires a lot of will-power to stick around after a couple of posts. If you notice, many bloggers give up after first few months and only a dedicated few keep going for long. So, if you have been blogging for at least a year, it’s worth doing it longer because you sure love blogging!

You can’t become the next The Blonde Salad, Kayture or Style Scrapbook over night. Not even after many years of blogging, writing articles, posting your personal style snaps and spending sleepless nights promoting them on social media. I have been blogging for 3 years now and I am sure most of you still do not know my name! 🙂 These celebrity bloggers have been lucky to start their fashion blogs at the right time when blogging was at it’s infancy. These days, fashion blogging is a competitive business and to survive in here as a professional would mean taking it really seriously! You have to mean business and also need to have a plan.

How many followers/views should I have until I get into some decent collaboration with brands?

This is a common question that I get asked very often. In these 3 years what I have learnt is more than the statistics page of your blog or the increase in your follower counts, what really matters is engagement. We all have those few loyal readers who look forward to our posts, genuinely love our style and believe in our opinions. Well, you need a lot of such people who love you and your blog. ‘Follow me and I will follow you back’ kind of followers and spam/purchased followers who will not visit your blog/social media after that first day are not the ones you should be targeting. But then again, who doesn’t like a big number? 🙂

Quality is better than quantity in most cases but in the world of fashion blogging, quality and quantity goes hand in hand. Always strive to post high quality articles, photographs and post them often. Search engines will love you more and you will get noticed a lot quicker than the ones who post just once a month. Having said that, end of the day it’s your blog and it’s your life! It’s always better to publish your best posts and if you are out of ideas (we call it blogger’s block!) take a break instead of posting half-heartedly.

These are some of the things that I learnt while running Style over Coffee. Hope you found them useful. If you have any specific questions that you’d like me to answer about blogging, fashion, beauty and Photography, ask them in the comment section below or in my social media accounts with the hashtag #STYLEOVERCOFFEE. Me and Pankaj will answer them all in a video in our Youtube Channel! Personal questions are welcome too as long as they are not too personal! 🙂

Have a great day guys! Keep reading Style Over Coffee!

Sarmistha, I loved it. It is true that the consistency wins the race at the end of the day and if you do not have long list of followers, you must go on with your passion. Many congratulations on completing three years in this beautiful space! Love

Great post – people like you who have been blogging for years inspire me to keep at it! (I’ve only been blogging for 6 weeks) I had no idea how time-consuming it would be but I’m enjoying the journey! x

Happy anniversary! Yes, blogging isn’t as easy as everyone thinks. I’m less than a year in and I’m still trying to establish a flow so I can be consistent next year.

I love the tip that it isn’t going to happen overnight… It’s so hard to stay patient and keep plugging away, but it’s absolutely the truth!

Great post. It is true that it is very frustrating at times and you want to give up but you can’t do that. If you keep on pushing it you will get there.
