DIY : Distressed Denim

by

Guess what I tried out over the weekends? Something that I had been thinking about for quite a while but was lacking theΒ courage to initiate. But finally I did overcome the fear of spoiling a favorite pair of jeans and took the plunge and this is what I created- a stylish pair of DIY-distressed denims!!

Agreed, this isΒ  not one of the most original ideas. Everyone has probably tried it sometime or the other, but since it took me such a long time to actually decide to go for a DIY rather than buying a pair (primarily because mine were not an old pair of jeans but a new one) I thought there would be many like me who would need a little help on how to go ahead πŸ™‚

So here is what you will need. A pair of jeans and some sand papers. As simple as that!

The first step is the most difficult one. Well not really difficult but confusing. That is to select the areas you want to distress. To get the placements right I actually wore the jeans and then marked the areas by rubbing a piece of sand paper. The slight wear and tear will clearly demarcate the area from the rest.

I then removed the jeans, laid it flat on a surface and started further rubbing it till I got my desired effects. Before you start rubbing don’t forget to protect the back of the denim legs by inserting a hard material right under the sections you want to sand paper. Otherwise you will end up tearing off the back of the denim as well (unless you want to do that). I inserted a magazines inside each leg.

And bingo! HereΒ are my DIY-distressed denims ready to be worn. Now, I wanted a minimum worn out look so I rubbed small sections and got the results accordingly. If you have a heavy distressed look in mind go ahead and rub more and larger areas perhaps!

I will be posting images of how I style these denims in the near future.

I hope this DIY-Distressed DenimsΒ post did help you do some serious denim distressing! You need not stick to just jeans! Let your imagination run wild andΒ go ahead and rub your sand papers on jackets, shirts and just about anything that is denim πŸ™‚

I like the idea of diy, and I like that you demonstrated your how-to’s. I’m a visual person, and it’s often hard for me to get things just with the written word. I think this is a great trend for younger people.
