I keep getting a lot of mails from many readers asking for tips on fashion blogging. Some of you send over very specific questions while others are very generic. I have been at it for a while trying to collect enough meaningful questions through a hashtag ‘STYLEOVERCOFFEE‘ but what I have noticed is most of you like to send over your questions privately through emails and messages 🙂
Nonetheless, all your questions and mails are important to me and this prompted me to start this new series of posts called ‘Blogging Tutorial‘ entirely based on readers’ requests.
This tutorial will be divided into text posts and videos and I hope you find them helpful and they answer all your questions.
So, you want to start a fashion blog?
Or, if you are reading this post, you might have started one already and getting a bit lost and don’t know how to get around it.
Whatever your current situation is with you fashion blog, my post today is all about helping you get a grip on you dream to be a successful fashion blogger!
Assuming your current situation is still contemplative, assuming you don’t know how exactly to go about starting a fashion blog, let me start by discussing about the right platform to start a blog.
Don’t worry, I will get to the advance tips as you read on 🙂
#Find the right Blog Platform
Blogger, Tumblr and WordPress are three most popular blogging platform where you can start your blog absolutely free. I am sure there are other sites as well that offer space where you can start a fashion blog, but these three platforms by far are the best.
I use WordPress as I find it more professional but many bloggers use Blogger without much of complains. Choose the one that you like the best.
#Pick a really eye catchy blog name and logo
You blog name is a part of your branding and your blog identity. Make sure it is as interesting as you can possibly make it.
Out of millions of fashion blogs out there, it’s the name and the logo that will attract visitors to your blog first thing.
Brain storm and put in all your time and efforts in naming your brand. When I started out my blog had a different name. It took me almost a week to just decide on the name of my blog!
Next comes a blog logo. If you are good with any graphic software, you can try your hand in creating a blog logo for yourself initially. If not, it’s worth hiring an expert to do this for you. If you like my blog logo, you can get in touch with me for designing your’s as well!
#Find your niche
Ask yourself these simple questions. What are your areas of expertise or interest within fashion?
Do you have incredible style ideas and an awesome personality to be a personal style blogger?
Can you write about an event like a pro journalist?
Do you have the uncanny ability to capture street style images?
Or, are you super creative in fashion photography? Find your niche!
Fashion blogging is a vast ocean and finding your island and making a mark requires you to do some introspection and figure out your true interest. Of course you can always add on to what you have started with or you can pick more than one areas of fashion. But don’t forget to ask yourself these questions before you plunge into the world of fashion blogging.
#Get a Cool Blog theme/layout
Now that you are ready with your blog title, logo and you have decided upon what you want to blog about, the next step is to choose a blog theme or layout. All the blogging sites offer a great choice of free themes, so picking one shouldn’t be very difficult. Get a layout that gels well with your brand. Is your style all clean and white washed? Or are you more of a colourful boho person? Your blog layout speaks a lot about your brand, so be very thoughtful
about what you choose.
And write your best content. ‘Content is the king’ and this statement is never going to be obsolete. Be sure to write quality content minus any grammatical and spelling errors.
Write content that has something to offer to your readers,be it entertainment, information, a peek into your personality, a story or an experience.
I know it’s easy to say, but trust me, the more you write, the better you’ll get with every post.
#Use Killer Photographs
Fashion is a very visual subject and the images that you put up on your blog are as important as the content itself, sometimes more. Whether you choose to click your own photographs or get them off the internet, they got to be of a very high quality.
Blurry, grainy images are a strict no, no!
If you are downloading your images from the internet, the best would be to visit royalty free image sites.
Essentially give credits wherever due as a part of blogging etiquette.
#Write a Strong Bio
Your readers would love to know more about who they are reading.
Put a ‘About Me’ page on your blog with your photograph on it.
[You may skip the photograph if you are a personal style blogger with your own images splashed all across the blog. Still it doesn’t hurt if you put up one extra though!]
Your bio page help the readers know you in person.
This is the best place to talk about your interests and why you started blogging. If you have done a fashion photography course, done an internship with a fashion magazine or have any experience in the niche you are blogging about, this is the right place to put them all up.
For instance, I have a degree in Fashion Design and have worked in fashion for more than a decade. Since it’s difficult to keep mentioning them on each of my blog posts, I have written all about it in my bio page.
#Add a Contact Page
Once you start a fashion blog and make it successful, a lot of brands and PR companies would love to contact you for various collaboration opportunities.
Make it easy for them by adding a contact page and mentioning how they’d be able to reach you.
Make the contact page easily visible on your site.
To start a Fashion blog is not difficult at all. Maintaining it sure is.
Once you have officially launched your blog, you will have to consistently keep updating it with new contents and photographs. That sure takes a lot of time. After publishing your first couple of posts, you will start seeing followers pouring in and they would only stick around if they see posts frequently.
There are way too may blogs out there and lack of consistency can make you get lost in the crowd.
Maintain a blog calendar and stick to it. Inform your readers on time if you are going on a vacation or will be away from your blog for sometime due to personal engagements.
#Get Active on Social Media
Your blog might be the single most important thing for you but a stand alone blog means nothing these days. Social Media is as important as the blog itself. So, create a Facebook Page, a Twitter handle, and Instagram and Pinterest accounts for your blog and start sharing your posts and images.
Social Media is a great way to promote blog posts and many blog readers discover blogs through social media.
That’s my guide to start a fashion blog. In my upcoming blog tutorials I will be sharing more of my knowledge and experience on how to drive traffic to your blog, how to click photographs for your blog and a lot more. So,subscribe to my newsletters to stay up to date on all the posts.
You can send over all your questions in reply to this post or in any of my social media channels with the hashtag #STYLEOVERCOFFFEE !

Have fun blogging! 🙂
